Boehringer Ingelheim Receives 2008 Best Places to Work Corporate Equality Index Award From Human Rights Campaign

Ridgefield, CT, September 17, 2007 —Boehringer Ingelheim today announced that the company has been awarded the 2008 Best Places to Work Corporate Equality Index from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.  This prestigious, national award measures how large companies in the United States treat their gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender (GBLT) employees, consumers and investors.  This national recognition clearly demonstrates Boehringer Ingelheim’s position as an Employer of Choice.

"We are pleased and honored to be receiving this prestigious award from the Human Rights Campaign," said J. Martin Carroll, president and chief executive officer of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals.  "The programs and policies that we have put in place here at Boehringer Ingelheim demonstrate our strong belief in a more inclusive culture, one in which every employee feels valued and welcomed.  This national recognition is further proof that Boehringer Ingelheim is an Employer of Choice."

The Corporate Equality Index, which this year evaluated criteria from 519 businesses, rates employers on a scale from 0 to 100 percent, and ratings are based on a number of criteria, including a company’s non-discrimination policies, diversity training and benefits for domestic partners and transgender employees.  In addition, it measures the extent to which employers protect their GLBT employees.

Of the 195 businesses that met all of the criteria and received the top rating, only nine are pharmaceutical companies.  “We are proud to be a leader in our industry dedicated to fostering a climate and culture of inclusion for all of our stakeholders,” added Carroll.

“More businesses than ever before have recognized the value of a diverse and dedicated workforce,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese.  “More importantly, these employers understand that discrimination against GLBT workers will ultimately hurt their ability to compete in the global marketplace.”

The Human Rights Campaign’s 2008 Best Places to Work Corporate Equality Index Report is available through HRC’s website at www.hrc.org/cei.
