We Care for Our Neighbors

Boehringer Ingelheim is sustained by the communities in which we work. We strive to return the favor.

How do you determine the health of a neighborhood? Any diagnosis should consider not just the needs of the community, but the strength of the efforts to address those needs. In every community where we operate, our goal is to be a therapeutic presence, channeling the considerable talents and energies of our employees as a force for good.

Caring for our neighbors means adopting the needs of the community as our own:  holding a blood drive to support local hospitals; joining with the United Way to support the most vital service organizations; contributing to community quality of life through the arts:  supporting local symphonies, art festivals and building new libraries.

Improving quality of life is a value that holds true whether we are developing a therapy for a global disease or serving the neighborhoods where we live and work. There is no better source for ideas on what a community needs than the employees who call it home. They take the lead in identifying and powering the initiatives that allow us to make a positive impact. Here are just a few examples:

AmeriCares Free Clinic
Ridgefield Corporate is a major supporter of the AmeriCares Free Clinic of Danbury, a provider of quality health care to uninsured residents in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. Through the clinic we also sponsor an outreach program via a Mobile Medical Unit that brings much needed services to home-bound people and underserved areas of the community.

Principal for a Day
In partnership with the Columbus Public School District, employees from Roxane Labs spend a day in an inner-city school as the principal. This hands-on experience and valuable perspective helps them identify opportunities for Roxane Labs employees to support the school with reading programs, tutoring, donations or other assistance.

Local Donations
Boehringer Ingelheim matches our strengths to the needs in our communities: VetMedica supports a local animal shelter with veterinary product donations; we encourage the next generation of scientists at local universities through scholarships, grants and partnering on research and development projects; BI Chemicals donated an ambulance and specialized response equipment to the Southside Virginia Emergency Crew.

Science Education
Ridgefield Corporate brings the lab to kids through our sponsorship of a BioBus with the Connecticut United for Research Excellence (CURE) organization, an education nonprofit. Outfitted with the latest in bioscience equipment and technology, this 40-foot, custom-designed mobile laboratory delivers hands-on bioscience experiments to over 5,000 students throughout Connecticut each year.

Job Ready
BI Chemicals worked with a local high school and Chamber of Commerce to share career skills with those newly entering the job market, or those looking to improve their prospects. Employees taught classes in topics such as successful interviewing and time management, and then mentored the students throughout their job search.
